Modern Protest Songs w/Lyrics. Share!

Fri Jan 20, 2006 at 08:38:34 AM PDT

We all know about those Protest Songs of the 60's. Well, there are modern day versions. Let's share some! I have three. What songs do you know?
Here are three cool songs that are probably unknown to you. Below I will give you links to the songs and the lyrics. All three are by a band named Gentleman Caller, based here in my town of Indianapolis. (Yes, I've seen them - they rock, and no they aren't paying/asking me to advertise for them. Also these links are legal for you to download. Gentleman Caller put them there.) These songs really rock when heard live. These recordings don't quite capture that. I still like them.

I Got No Religion

Well the King's on attack
and the Queen's on her back
The Jester's in bed
with a pounding in his head
Well I got no religion man...
Down with Fox News
and Dennis Miller
and Ronald Silver
and down with Kid Rock
I got no religion man...
Well down with our King
and all of his puppeteers
and all of his volunteers
and all of this fear
Down with this apathy
We should not go to sleep
'cause this is not a dream
This is not a dream
100,000 Iraqis freed
100,000 Iraqis dead
Well I got no religion man...

Buzzards In Trees

There are folks doing laundry and people in line
There are some making money and some doing time
There are men who hold children and kiss them goodbye
There are bombs coming down and their blood is in your eyes
There are folks writing letters to people they like
Little girls breaking pencils and clothes on the line
There are women in bathrobes bleeding to death
There are bombs coming down and their blood is on your breath
There are folks making coffee and buzzards in trees
There are kids in the alley and leaves in the breeze
There are ghosts in their doorways and death in their dreams
There are bombs coming down and their blood is on your feet
There are are voters in shackles and bones on the ground
Assassins in congress and they're laughing out loud
Men from my hometown dying and dead
There are bombs coming down and their blood is on your bed
There are students and teachers with blood on their sleeves
Climbing through the rubble and some underneath
There are callouses forming from shoveling graves
There are bombs coming down and their blood is on your face
Let flowers remind you of funeral cars
and until this war is over let it bear on your heart
Let anger wash over your body like a flood
An ocean of death with your hands in the blood

Uniforms

I woke up when I heard the screams
of a thousand men across the sea
American men
They die in streets where you've never been and you'll never see

I heard the storms and the whistling leaves
and my front door was reflecting me
Shadows moved from remembering
it's more than uniforms that we're burying

Tennessee boys and Iraqi Queens
taking shrapnel from the American dream
My head's a wreck and my child's asleep
Remember best what your children mean

Raise your hands if you're listening
it's more than uniforms that we're burying
Remember best what your children mean
it's more than uniforms that we're burying

(You can find more info on this band at Musical Family Tree or Gentleman Caller's myspace site. You might find other versions of these songs there.)

OK..so what songs can you share? Anything. And if you can provide the lyrics and/or the mp3 file (or links), please do. Otherwise just inform us and maybe we can find it. Thanks! (Let me know if any links do not work.)
